2023 State of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Sector
The 2023 State of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Sector report builds on the analysis from the 2019 report and 2020 report to close further data gaps in the ASM sector. The 2023 Report uses the Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5): “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”” as the framework for analyzing ASM’s contributions to global development.
The 2023 State of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Sector report examines whether and how legal frameworks inhibit or promote women’s equality and empowerment in ASM, along with analyzing several other key barriers to women’s participation and empowerment in the sector including social protections and access to occupational health and safety (OHS).
For the first time in its history, the 2023 State of the Sector report collects primary data with support from Delve data collection partners to systematically detail gender inequalities in ASM. Developed by the Delve team, the 2023 Delve State of Sector Survey was launched in November 2022 comprising three questionnaires targeting three stakeholder groups: government officials, leaders of Women in Mining (WIM) groups and artisanal and small-scale miners.
