Estimates of the size of the ASM sector in Mozambique range between 100,0001,2 and 300,000.3;The ASM sector produces primarily gold, but also construction materials, gemstones, niobium (columbium), and tantalum2;. Gold production has significantly increased in the country in recent years, coming almost exclusively from the ASM sector, despite the government’s efforts to attract more industrial mining.4
