Foreign direct investment and poverty alleviation in Tanzania: a case of Bulyanhulu and Geita Gold Mines Limited in Kahama and Geita districts

Emmanuel Nyankweli researched the economic, social and environmental aspects of gold mining in Tanzania. He also analyzed how gold mining has contributed to poverty reduction in the country. His research shows that the socio-economic status of residents in mining areas has improved compared to residents of comparable rural areas. This is despite environmental and health concerns being reported. Government and mining companies are working together on measures to mitigate the environmental impact of mining activities and ensure sustainable development, including through organizing waste disposal and protecting water resources. Nyankweli concludes that attracting foreign direct investment is an important milestone for Tanzania. Despite this, current policies are not sufficient to achieve good management of natural resources and limit negative externalities.
