Golden Rules: Recommendations to Protect ASM in the Face of Health Emergencies
Contributed by the National Program for the Environmentally Sound Management of Chemicals Substances in their Life Cycle, Ecuador
The coronavirus pandemic may represent another lost decade for the economies of the region and is terribly exacerbating social inequalities. Specifically, for Ecuador, where artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) represents an important part of gold production and direct employment for communities, the health emergency affects the economy of families and impacts most strongly on the base tier, which is artisanal mining, who depend almost exclusively on the sector for subsistence.
Below, we provide the "Golden Rules" campaign which provides recommendations to promote self-care measures to help mitigate the risk of the contagion. Through this material we seek, in a simple and practical way, to make known the considerations that must be taken into account before, during and at the end of this productive activity, which is significant for the country's economy.
