About

The Delve Exchange is a new online network to facilitate knowledge sharing and support between ASM associations, ASM communities and quarry workers in different countries and regions during the pandemic. It will use easily accessible technologies such as WhatsApp, Zoom and YouTube.

Regional ASM leaders and ASM experts will facilitate the Delve Exchange. Its partners include the Association of Women in Mining in Africa, The University of Queensland, the World Bank, the OECD and the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme, implemented by the UNDP. The core funding for the Delve Exchange comes from the World Bank’s Extractives Global Programmatic Support (EGPS) Trust Fund.

What is the Delve Exchange in Practice?

The Delve Exchange is an online network to connect ASM miners and quarry workers and showcase their knowledge and expertise regionally and globally. ASM miners are the protagonists and voices of the Delve Exchange.

Our activities cover six regions: Africa - English Speaking; Africa - French Speaking; Latin America; Caribbean; South and Central Asia; and Southeast Asia and Pacific. A Knowledge Exchange Coordinator facilitates Delve Exchange activities in each region. See contacts.

The Delve Exchange has three components:

  • Delve Exchange Groups – regional WhatsApp groups and one global WhatsApp group
  • Delve Exchange Forums – regional forums on Zoom
  • Delve Exchange Training – a selection of training opportunities to be confirmed.
Delve Exchange Groups

The Exchange Groups take place as six regional networks, with one Regional Knowledge Exchange Coordinator leading each network. The regional networks consist of:

  • An open WhatsApp Group to facilitate exchange between all members of the network. This group is open to ASM miners, quarry workers and their representative associations.
  • A curated WhatsApp group where only the Regional Knowledge Exchange Coordinator will post announcements and selected member contributions.

Each regional curated group will operate in a single language depending on the region (English, French, Spanish).

Each open network may also include posts by network members in local languages depending on their preference (e.g. Swahili and Quechua; see Table 1).

A curated WhatsApp Group is available at the global level to share announcements and selected contributions from the network. Anyone interested in artisanal and small-scale mining and quarrying is welcome to join this group to keep informed, hear stories from miners and their associations, and support the network.

The Regional Knowledge Exchange Coordinators encourage members to make three types of submissions via photo, diagram/drawing, video, voice recording or short text entries.

  • Practice Stories: stories sharing members’ knowledge or experience about a particular topic or practice.
  • Exchange Stories: stories sharing photo, video, diagram/drawing, voice recording or short text stories describing how members have implemented something they learnt from the Network.
  • Challenge Stories: stories where members will seek assistance from their peers in addressing a problem they are facing.
Delve Exchange Forums

Each month, the Coordinator of each region will facilitate a regional knowledge exchange forum on Zoom. The forums will consist of presentations by miners and association representatives from the respective regions. The forums will cover a different topic of interest to the network each month, in the language of the regional network (see Table 1).

The Delve Exchange Groups will circulate announcements to convene the Forums.

The Delve Exchange included two virtual global forums as part of the OECD Responsible Mineral Supply Chains Global Forums of 2021 and 2022. Delve Exchange members shared experiences with an international audience through these forums.

Delve Exchange Training

The Delve Exchange will offer selected access to external training providers wishing to invite the participants of the Delve Exchange to register for free training and technical presentations.
